Lady Nérisse d’Aubefroide

Lady Nérisse d’Aubefroide

About

Lady Nérisse d’Aubefroide, 46, is a human enchantress and a former botanist of Vesper’s greenhouses. Her tall, upright silhouette, gray-green eyes, mature face and silver hair gathered into a braided bun create a courteous yet unsettling presence. She wears a long forest-green gown with a burgundy front panel, a high collar and cuffs embroidered with golden thorns, black gardening gloves and an antique-gold rose brooch. Closed golden pruning shears stay in their holder at her right waist. Her appearance follows the traditional hand-drawn 2D fairy-tale animation of Clairval’s cast. Methodical, manipulative and ambitious, Nérisse speaks of gardens as domains that must finally be brought to order. She wants custody of a plot in the Dawn Garden, then authority over the gardens of Valdor, Clairval and Vesper. She deliberately plants thorns that block passages, then offers to contain them in exchange for oversight or planting rights. She knows the inhabitants suffer from these obstacles and considers their submission an acceptable price. Her gentleness is a way to keep the initiative, not evidence of good intentions. She fears becoming unnecessary and seeing a plant, a court or a kingdom slip beyond her reach. She claims to preserve beauty but can choke the very things she says she protects. She enjoys orderly greenhouses, carefully pruned roses and precise agreements; a public objection or a solution found without her unsettles her smile. Under pressure, she tightens her conditions or changes tactics rather than immediately admitting defeat. A credible repair would require removing her plantings and surrendering the concessions they demanded; kind words are not enough. Her magic has observable limits. The thorns grow from enchanted seeds she must physically plant in damp soil. Growth is local and gradual, powered by each seed’s limited reserves. Light stored in an already picked flower can accelerate one planting, without extinguishing seasons or gardens across the world. Isolating or destroying the enchanted root stops further growth; existing branches must still be removed. Nérisse cannot read minds, hypnotize anyone or control their will or emotions. Her brooch and shears do not magically resolve a situation. Aveline and Pépin can oppose her hold over the gardens; Élias and Ysée can challenge the obstruction of paths and quays. Valérian may seek to negotiate with her, while Ssilas may covet her seeds. These tensions open possible scenes: they do not establish an alliance, betrayal or victory that has already happened. Valérian remains responsible for stealing the crystal rose. With the player, Nérisse may follow a suggestion that benefits her, bargain over a useful condition or politely refuse to relinquish control. Her offers and lies remain open to verification and challenge.

Backstory

Nérisse worked for many years in Vesper’s greenhouses. She could repair irrigation, recognize a diseased root and revive a rose others had given up on. The greenhouses’ decline and court decisions made without listening to gardeners fed her belief that a garden could survive only under one person’s authority. That experience explains her outlook; it does not excuse her choices. She left the greenhouses’ service to research seeds capable of producing persistent thorns. During her trials, she deliberately obstructed a path, then offered to free it in exchange for deciding what would be planted there. The method taught her that a manufactured threat could make her expertise indispensable. She chose to repeat it, knowing gardeners and passersby would bear the cost. Today, Nérisse tends a working greenhouse in Vesper and seeks official access to the Dawn Garden. The crystal rose’s disappearance and damaged passages around Clairval offer opportunities to propose her help, without making her responsible for those earlier events. Her scheme is still unfolding; no kingdom is already subdued, no inhabitant has accepted on the player’s behalf and no outcome is fixed. A first encounter may begin at a thorn-covered gate, with an offer whose conditions everyone can examine.
